Abstract

In today’s educational environment of high-stakes testing and commercial programs for reading, being a language arts teacher can be an overwhelming experience. Lead author Regie Routman tells us that without ongoing professional conversations, we won’t have the knowledge and support we need to determine what really matters in literacy instruction. Authors in this issue encourage us to be responsive teachers and focus on what our particular students need rather than what is provided by a commercially published program.
