Abstract

Sheri Skelton has taught in a rural Alaskan village for thirteen years, but it was immediately clear to her when she arrived from Iowa that does not have the same meaning everywhere. Against a detailed backdrop of the people and the land, she reveals what she has learned about her students’ knowledge of place and culture and how she uses her understanding to teach more effectively.
