Abstract

A summer job with the Literacy Project at Alisal High teaching at-risk secondary students, taught this elementary teacher that there is more to teaching reading at the secondary level that what she had previously expected. Through this article, Barr describes the various methods she used in the classroom (cognitive active reading strategies, phonics and study skills, reciprocal teaching instruction, grade level content instruction, writing instruction, and rubric instruction) and reflects on her efforts.
