Abstract

Everyone within the profession is aware of the great difference that exists in many schools between actual classroom practice in teaching English and practice based on research and modem theory. In this article Dr. Carlsen identifies the basic assumptions underlying “traditional” and “modern” teaching of English. Dr. Carlsen is head of the Department of English at the University High School, State University of Iowa, and a professor of English and education.
