This is an angry but significant article. Though it was inspired by a specific article in another magazine, Professor Sledd’s essay has general importance as a statement of the position of the structural linguist. Dr. Sledd, a Ph.D. from the University of Texas and a Rhodes Scholar, has published widely in the fields of language history and language structure. His latest book is A Short Introduction to English Grammar. A member of the faculty at Northwestern University, he is a visiting professor this year at the University of Ceylon.
